Snorkeling Around Guánica

A string of cays off the coast of Guanica make this town a great destination for snorkelers who don't mind a little sea travel, and in deed relish in the idea of spending a bit of time on a boat.

One of the most highly recommended snorkeling destinations in Puerto Rico is called Gilligans Island and it is a cay that Guánica lays claim to.  Not only is the visibility stunningly clear and the underwater sites simply gorgeous, but the calm nature of the lagoon makes it ideal for snorkeling even with young children who are just learning to swim.  This destination and others is best accessed when you sign up for a snorkeling tour which can be done through one of the local dive or watersports shops, or a sail boat charter or a tour guide that specializes in snorkeling.

If snorkeling direct from a local beach is your preference, you can head about 20 minute west of Guánica along the coast to La Parguera where you can rent snorkeling gear from kiosks in the sand and walk right into an underwater world filled with vibrant fish in a lagoon protected by a healthy coral reef.

Snorkeling Sites

If you'd like to explore what's down below you might enjoy Cana Gorda State Park. A giant clear pool with calm, shallow waters, this site is one of the best for families snorkeling with small children. There is not much coral, but there are plenty of little fish and mangroves to explore. This snorkeling site is situated easily reached by taxi Southeast of central Guánica.

Tamarindo Beach is another snorkeling spot you might enjoy. Part of a nature reserve, this site is home to an amazing collection of sea life in the small reef that is currently growing thanks to the University of Puerto Rico students that are planting coral. Sea life here includes sea turtles and stingrays among others. The beach is very rocky, so water shoes are a must.
