Taxis in Guánica

Keep Guanica's taxis in mind as a major source of transportation

Although there are more than a dozen of notable attractions in Guánica, many of them rest along the coast within walking distance from one another. For this reason, many tourists find it is easy to skip renting a car in favor of hoofing it. Those who choose to forgo a rental will want to keep a few backup transportation options in mind for rainy days or when they have a greater distance than normal to travel. This is where taxis come in quite handy.

Taxi Companies

Guánica exists mainly as a fishing village which just happens to be backed by a highly populous city when you consider the amount of people living in just over two square miles of land. But, because of its more rural style of living, taxis are not so readily available on the streets. There are plenty of drivers available, but they often prefer to wait until someone has called to request a ride rather than drive around town looking for passengers. If you do spot one on the street, you'll recognize it by the fact that it is white with the words "Taxi Turistico" written on the front.

Rates, Fares, and Fees

Throughout Puerto Rico there is no one way to determine taxi fare. Some places operate meter, others like negotiation, and others have set rates. In Guánica, there is a mixture of drivers who like to use the meter and drivers that like to determine the rate by talking with their passengers. Ultimately, you can request which method you feel most comfortable with.

If you go with the meter, you'll pay $1(USD) base, then $0.10(USD) for each one-third mile traveled. This is a pretty good value compared to other spots on the island, like San German, which charges $2.50(USD) for every two-thirds miles covered.

This chart shows a few taxi rates for the area.

Typical Fares Around Guánica

$ 52.02 - $ 57.50 Guánica Mayagüez

You can often get an even better deal by hiring your driver by the hour. This is useful if you have a lot of stops to make because you'll not only save money, but time as well. Whatever service you use your driver for, be sure to include a tip. It is common to add somewhere between 10 and 15 percent of your total bill.

The taxis in Guánica are known for being clean and comfortable, with friendly and knowledgeable drivers. With low rates to boot, it is no wonder so many tourists choose to rely on this mode of transportation to get around.
