Snorkeling Around Harbour Island

A small island off the coast of Eleuthera and measuring only one and half square miles in size, Harbour Island is to this day only accessible by boat.  Unfortunately, not every boat has made the crossing successfully thanks to a ridge of very shallow coral reef.  While this is bad news for the boat's captains, it certainly makes for some of the most interesting snorkeling opportunities in the whole of the Bahamas.

The Devil's Backbone is the name of this coral ridge, and here are dozens of bits and pieces of boats and their anchors that have been laid to rest here, then found themselves grown over with coral.  Various small reef fish can be seen here in droves as well.

This isn't the only snorkeling draw around Harbour Island, however.  This little island in the vast Caribbean Sea is also known for its blue holes and caverns.  Several locals make their living offering snorkeling tours, but if you plan to go it alone, head to the east coast for all of the best sites.  Some can even be accessed after a short swim from one of the pink sand beaches.

If you're looking forward to exploring what's down below you might enjoy visiting Man Island. This well secluded site is best known for its abundance of octopus which snorkelers have a great deal of fun interacting with. This snorkeling site is situated on Eleuthera, North of Harbour Island.
