The beauty of Holbox is that it is slightly disconnected from the rest of the country, and the only way to access it is by boat. For most people, this means taking the ferry which runs back and forth between the mainland and the island throughout the day.
The nearest continental town to the island is Chiquila, which is home to the ferry that provides passage to Holbox. The ferry is a modern catamaran with comfortable seating, restrooms, and televisions to keep you entertained on the 15 minute ride.
The ferry leaves Chiquila daily at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., noon, 2:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 8:30 p.m. with return trips at 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. The trip costs 80 pesos, which is around $6(USD) per person.
Don't worry if you've driven a vehicle from Cancun, because there are several parking lots around the terminal where you can park your car for 50 pesos a day.

Part of the fun of a vacation to Holbox is the journey it takes to get there, which takes a bit of work but really allows you to feel as though you are setting off on a quiet getaway where you can escape the business of life back home. Taking the ferry is one step along the way, and indeed for many, the most relaxing of them all.
