Once a hideout for pirates, Holbox Lagoon Beach is now a hideout for visitors looking for an incredibly remote beach. Visitors that make the journey will be met with some of the calmest water on the island, and often a beach all to themselves.
Located on the southwestern coast of the island of Holbox, 1.3 miles south west of Downtown Holbox, You might want to drop by even if you aren't staying in the vicinity. Holbox Lagoon Beach is a distinguishable relaxation spot because it's the ideal location for escaping the typical tourist haunts. Other nearby beaches you'll come across in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean may be just as beautiful, but are usually busier since they're located by some of the most popular tourist areas in town.
The lagoon is a little out of the way, especially for an island with no cars. You can find it on the Western edge of the island, right before the southwest point. Most visitors will take a boat though, and that option is recommended.
Protected from the sea, this lagoon has virtually no waves, making snorkeling and swimming easy. However, for most visitors of this little stretch of a paradise, laying out on the sand for a peaceful nap is the plan. Just make sure to bring some bug spray - the lagoon is surrounded by a protected mangrove forest, which can be a popular hangout for mosquitoes and other insects.
Keep in mind that restrooms won't be found on-site, but you may be able to find facilities at a nearby business. Happily, the off-shore waters are fit for snorkeling, so purchase or rent some equipment if you're hoping to find some interesting marine life.
Visitors will find this beach on the South West coast of Holbox; it's located near attractions like Holbox Ecological Preserve, which is pretty close, so tourists could take a cab or probably walk to this attraction.
