On the East side of the island just short distance from the downtown area is Punta Mosquito. Don't be fooled by the name, this beach is actually a lovely spot typified by flamingo sightings and a sandbar.
Located on the northern outskirts of Quintana Roo, 2.1 miles northeast of Downtown Holbox, Punta Mosquito is on the North East edge of Mexico. You might want to drop by regardless of whether you are staying in the immediate vicinity. There are plenty of advantages to visiting a beach that isn't packed full of hotel guests; less popular beaches like Punta Mosquito might not be typical "beach scenes", but are nice and private.
Unfortunately, restrooms will not be available here, so if you're visiting with small children you might want to consider a different location.
Punta Mosquito is on the North East coast of Mexico; the area is home to other attractions such as Whale Shark Habitats, which is a mile and a half away.

Mexico has many beaches, and Punta Mosquito is just one option.
Another option worth considering is Holbox Beach, located two miles away.
Of course, there are lots of other things to do and see in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean; then again, taking a swim at Punta Mosquito is certainly a fun way to enjoy the area's natural attractions.
