Holbox is one of the Yucatan Puninsula's lesser-known destinations, and that is just the way most of the people who visit here like it. Though they do boast a quiet, out-of-the-way feel, their true claim to fame are the snorkeling tours that allow underwater explorers to see whale sharks up close and personal.
An island that has no coral reef to speak of and is overrun with seaweed and sand wouldn't normally be on someone's list as a top snorkeling destination. Holbox, however, is a different story. The world's largest fish, the Whale Shark, migrates through the waters offshore the island every year between the months of June and September.
Scuba diving with these creatures is prohibited by the government, but snorkeling is not, and because you are dealing with such a massive sea animal, signing up for a guided tour is highly recommended. The Whale Sharks feed on plankton, which abounds in these waters, so it is easy for most tour groups to seek them out just by looking out for places where the Whale Sharks can feed.
In addition to Whale Sharks, you may also see sea turtles, manta rays, and dolphins, which is just frosting on an already gorgeous cake. It is important to note, though, that the plankton that the Whale Sharks so love make visibility on the low side, so you may not be able to see them as well as other areas along the coast.
Some people believe the best snorkeling is accessed away from the shore.
If you want to snorkel during a boat trip, you should consider VIP Holbox. The boat and land tours at VIP Holbox feature journeys to destinations such as Bird Island, Passion Island, Yalahau Cente, Punta Mosquito, Cabo Catoche, Chichen Itza and Valladolid, Rio Lagartos, Tulum, and Coba. Kayaking through the mangroves, swimming with whale sharks, and fishing tours are additional adventures that may be arranged.
Another option to consider is Whale Shark Tours by Holbox Travel. As a first rate travel agency that is also fluent in English, Spanish, and French, anyone who chooses to take a Whale Shark Tour with Holbox Travel will have a fun and comfortable time. They're located in central Holbox.
A third option is Mexican Caribbean Tours. Perhaps the most exciting trips that Mexican Caribbean Tours has to offer include a snorkel tour to Cabo Catoche, a tour of Contoy Island, or the 3 island tour to Bird Island, Yalahau, and Passion Island. Additionally, you may swim with whale sharks or take a tour to Boca Iglesia.
