How to Reach Humacao by Airplane

A stop at the international airport is necessary before transferring to Humacao

Puerto Rico is one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean, especially for U.S. Citizens who don't need a passport to fly to this U.S. commonwealth. There are numerous airports located throughout Puerto Rico, though only two that are commonly used as international airports. The rest are domestic airports that allow tourists to fly from town to town. In order to visit Humacao, many tourists will fly into the international airport in San Juan and connect with the local airport to Humacao.

About the Airport

Your first stop when arriving in Puerto Rico will be at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU). Although it is technically located in the city of Isla Verde, most say it is in San Juan – it is such a common thought that the airport is even often called the San Juan International Airport. Since it opened in May of 1955 it has been owned by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, but managed by the private group the Aerostar Airport Holdings, which makes it technically a private international airport.

When it originally opened, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport has just one asphalt runways measuring 9,783 feet long, a navigation tower, three terminals, and a small parking lot. As its popularity has grown, so has the space, which now houses an additional concrete runway that measures 8,016 feet long, conference rooms, a food court, and a shopping center plus one additional terminal. Today it is a major gateway for air travel in the Caribbean, and over 8 million passengers pass through the airport each year.

Next Stop, Humacao

From Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, your next step will be to board a domestic flight to the Humacao Airport (HUC). Located only a mile outside of the business district of Humacao, this is the most convenient airport for tourists to fly to who are staying in town. The airport is set on 14 acres of land and has one asphalted runway that measures 2,450 feet long. Humacao Airport averages about 14 arrivals and departures each day, many of which connect with Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.

Not everyone will fly to Humacao. The town is only about an hour south east of Isla Verde, and many tourists choose to either hire a taxi or rent a car. Those who will rent a car and drive themselves will find the most direct route to be PR 26 to the Jose de Diego Expressway to PR 1 South to PR 30. The cost of renting a car is between $40 and $70(USD) a day, not including taxes and fees.

Knowing about local airports and what it takes to get to Humacao makes it easier as you begin the process of booking your transportation to your vacation destination. Flying the whole way may be convenient for some, but too expensive for others. Keep your own preferences and the preferences of those you are traveling with in mind as you begin putting your final plans into action.
