Overcrowded by hotels, restaurants, and high-end shopping centers -- not to mention the main international airport, Isla Verde has little to no landmarks located directly within city limits.  To soak up local culture, however, you need only travel to the surrounding towns such as Old San Juan.

Museo de arte de Puerto Rico

Museo de arte de Puerto Rico is a museum on the edge of Isla Verde. Spanning 130,000 square feet, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico has worked towards providing the Puerto Rican public with access to contemporary artwork since 2000. There is a permanent collection of Puerto Rican and Latin art from the 16th century to present, plus a number of educational programs that are available to educate the public and raise awareness about the world of visual arts.

Another landmark that often intrigues visitors is Museum of History, Anthropology and Art. It can be found at University Of Puerto Rico San Juan and located in Rio Piedras, 2.9 mi. South West of central Isla Verde. This small museum is actually just part of the full museum, which is closed to the public. The rotating exhibits that the museum does offer, however, is diverse, high quality, and sure to be a hit by any history buff.

Museum Of Art Of Puerto Rico: The Museum of Art of Puerto Rico is the premier visual arts museum on the island. Housed inside the museum is a collection of over 1,100 pieces of art work, all created by Puerto Rican artists.

Historical Sites

Ateneo Puertorriqueño

Enjoy discovering the history of foreign countries? If that's the case, you might want to visit a few of these historical sites during your vacation.

A landmark that often intrigues visitors is Fuerte San Geronimo. It is situated on Viejo San Juan, 4.6 mi. West-Northwest of central Isla Verde. Fortín de San Gerónimo was built to replace the original "El Boqueron" that was destroyed in 1598 by the British Navy. After the completion, and the renovation of other forts in San Juan, San Geronimo became the first line of defense in the case of an attack.

Another landmark worth visiting is Plaza San Juan Bautista. It is found within Viejo San Juan, 6.0 mi. West-Northwest of central Isla Verde. Once used as a parade route for Spanish Troops, now Plaza San Juan Bautista is now a National Historic Landmark where visitors can view a number of historic buildings and sculptures.

Ateneo Puertorriqueño: Tourists are welcome to tour the on-site museum, which features historical documents and island memorabilia, as well as attend cultural productions such as plays and concerts put on by the center. The main goal of Ateneo Puertorriqueño is to promote the arts amongst Puerto Ricans, so much of the facilities offerings are geared towards locals.

Caballito del Mar

Travelers may explore some other interesting sites to visit close to Isla Verde.

A landmark that often intrigues visitors is Bahia Urbana. It is located on Viejo San Juan, 6.0 mi. West-Northwest of central Isla Verde. Walk along the Southern Side of Old San Juan on this scenic trail that stands as a testament to the economic and cultural power of Puerto Rico. Here you will find sculptures, monuments, and other art, as well as restaurants, stores, water activities, and ever changing live entertainment.

Another common landmark for vacationers is Caballito del Mar. It is situated on Viejo San Juan, 6.1 mi. West-Northwest of central Isla Verde. Created by local artist Jose Ignacio Morales, this tall seahorse stands against the city for all walking along the Bahia Urbana to appreciate.

Raices Fountain: One of the most romantic spots in Old San Juan, Raices Fountain is an important testimant to the cultures that built the island of Puerto Rico and made it the melting pot that it is today. Designed by architect Miguel Carlo and completed in May of 1992, this fountain honors the island's heritage.
