The truth is, Isla Verde is not one of the places in Puerto Rico where snorkeling is recommended – but don't count it out as your next vacation destination just yet. You don't have to travel far to find one of the island's best underwater landscapes.
Isla Verde is located along Puerto Rico's north coast. Here, the waters can be rough at times, and visibility is rarely over 20 feet. Although water temperatures of between 75 and 85 degrees may be tempting, you'll need to head elsewhere to find the best snorkeling opportunities.
Most tourists staying in Isla Verde will sign up for a snorkeling tour that takes them about an hour away to Fajardo. This town is on the east coast and very near where the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea meet to create unique conditions that result in a world under the sea that must be seen to believed. Water conditions are often smooth and calm, visibility can go up to 100 feet, and sea life is very active.
If you sign up for a tour, they'll provide you with your gear; however, if you choose to drive yourself and hit the beach for some snorkeling, you'll need to rent your snorkel and mask. You can do this from a kiosk on the beach or a local dive shop for about $15 to $20(USD).
