Tropical Lagoon

Tropical Lagoon is true to its name. Its a pool of ocean water that is inland from the main beach, round and darker blue than the turquoise sea. It's fun to swim but there is no true sandy beach to speak of as trees surround it on all sides. It is adjacent to the Tropical Lagoon Resort and therefore will probably be crowded with swimmers and onlookers.

Located toward the center of Portland Parish, 1.1 miles west-northwest of Fairy Hill, Tropical Lagoon is on the East coast of Jamaica. You should consider stopping by even if you are not staying nearby. If you plan to sunbathe or take a nap on a fairly secluded beach, you should consider visiting Tropical Lagoon.

Amenities and Ambiance

Please note that public restrooms are not available, so those of you traveling with small children may want to consider another spot. You'll find the waters off-shore to be clear enough for snorkeling, so grab your equipment if you're looking to see what goes on beneath the surface.

Other Beaches

Of course, you'll find plenty of other beaches in Jamaica, so if Tropical Lagoon doesn't sound like your type of scene, you have options.

You might also enjoy Fairy Hill Beach, found just a short distance away. Fairy Hill Beach attracts locals and visitors alike to its energetic shores. During the week crowds are at a minimum and snorkeling is fantastic at the small off shore reef, but bring your own equipment. A small eatery serves vegetarian and Jamaican jerk dishes for a nice afternoon snack. If you're looking for a more active beach scene, you might enjoy people watching at Winnifred Beach. You'll find it three quarters of a mile to the east.

Vacationers may also want to visit San San Beach, located less than a mile away. $8(USD) will get you into this private beach that is perfect for snorkeling and enjoying the warm, shallow waters in this protected area. Near Frenchman's Cove, the atmosphere is more upscale and Princess Island, across the way, is an easy swim to a secluded island. A lunch bar and equipment rentals round out a fun beach day at San San Beach.

Tropical Lagoon could be the ideal stretch of sand, but it is possible that it may not be the best choice for your family; in which case there are other beaches (and other outdoor attractions) worth trying.
