Port Royal

Immortalized by tales of British Navy-men and stories of pirates, Port Royal was the capital of early Jamaica and the stronghold of the British Empire in the New World. Originally in Spanish possession, the British were able to seize the area take control of this vital site in 1655.

Exhibits and Offerings

Port Royal is a pretty large area, and can be considered an entire historic district. Visitors can walk around this historic fortress and see many of the buildings that once house powerful men, experienced war fighters, and the people that helped shape the region's history.

Much of the area has been restored in its colonial image, and as you walk around you can get a feel of how the port would have looked three centuries ago.

Guests will find an on-site dining area allowing hungry guests to have a bite to eat before or after visiting.

Location and What's Nearby

Port Royal visitors will be able to find a few options for island pastimes like playing a few holes of golf and taking to the coast without having to look very hard. Historic site patrons also wishing to get in a game of golf will surely enjoy heading over to nearby Caymanas Golf Club. If you aren't a golfer, you're not out of luck - head to Maiden Cay Beach, which is the closest beach to Port Royal. Also, you might run into some extra outdoor opportunities in the vicinity.
