Snorkeling Around Kingston

Tourists heading to the Kingston area have a little bit more work cut out for them when it comes to planning some time snorkeling during their getaway, but if you're willing to travel a short distance, the pay-off is tremendous.

In truth, Kingston is not one of the best towns on the island for a snorkeling excursion.  The surf in this area is just a little too rough to make it a pleasurable experience, and run off from the harbor traffic brings just enough pollution to diminish the desired visibility.

What most of Kingston's visitors end up doing is planning a boat trip over to the uninhabited island of Lime Cay for a day of relaxing on a secluded beach and plenty of snorkeling opportunities.  This can be done by heading to Port Royal Ferry Docks and from there it is just 15 minutes by boat.  Be aware that you will have to bring your own snorkeling gear, which you can rent at a local if you don't already own it.

Though Kingston may not have the best conditions, most of the rest of Jamaica is known for water temperatures of over 80 degrees, visibility of 70 to 100 feet, colorful and healthy reef systems, and exotic looking sea life.  If you have the chance to travel to other coastal areas outside of town, bringing your snorkel kit along is highly recommended.
