Uwi Port Royal Marine Laboratory

The Port Royal Marine Lab is an educational research center which is part of the University of the West Indies. Driven to provide the public with a better knowledge and appreciation for the natural world, and more specifically, the Jamaican natural world, they offer guided tours to the public.

Offerings and Cost

The laboratory offers 4 interactive and informative group nature tours. Private boat rentals are also available through the center.

The Mangrove Talk and Boat Tour highlights the local mangrove system. Some of the subjects touched on include the diversity within these areas as well as the threats the mangroves face. This is done by exposure to the animals who live here and outlining food chains and webs.

The Pollution Boat Tour takes guests to the Kingston Harbour, where guides outline the impacts pollution has on the area. There is even a lab-at-sea option, bringing physio-chemical tests along for the ride to do some tests.

Sampling Techniques is a land-locked option where the group visits a salina. This location houses coastal plants such as Batis and many species of mangrove. Guides will demonstrate how to assess density, organism distribution, and adaptations.

The Biodiversity Centre Tour is another land-locked option, touring the laboratory grounds and Biodiversity Centre. Here, you will find an interactive touch tank that is home to creatures such as Sea Urchins, Starfish, and Sea Cucumbers.

The Mangrove Talk and Boat Tour costs $700. The Pollution Boat Tour costs $800 per person. Sampling techniques costs $850. The Biodiversity Centre Tour costs $600 per person.

All tours are by appointment only.
