You may not expect it because eco-tourism dominates La Vega, but it is possible to plan a getaway here using a combination of taxis and local buses to get around.
Local buses are known as guaguas and are actually minivans and minibuses that operate on set routes and pick up passengers for $1(USD) or less per person. The vehicles may look a little shoddy, and rarely have air conditioning, but they are an inexpensive way to get from place to place.
There are also several buses companies, including Caribe Tours and Metro Buses, which offer inter-city bus transport on full-sized buses that are well-maintained and have air conditioning so cold that a jacket is recommend. The general cost is about $10(USD) per 150 miles traveled, and these buses can get you to Santo Domingo, Santiago De Los Caballeros, Samana, and Puerto Plata.
