Attractions in Las Galeras

Located at the end of the Samana Peninsula, Las Galeras is a quiet town home to a small community of European ex-pats who make their living promoting tourism.  There are plenty of ways to keep busy, from visiting the local beaches to fishing and diving, but as far as actual attractions are concerned, you might have an easier time finding sites to see about a half an hour away in the town of Samana. 

Beaches

Las Galeras Beach

You'll discover a large number of beaches to visit in and around the area. Snorkeling is available at some of these beaches, for vacationers who enjoy this relaxing pastime. Click on each beach name to get additional information about that particular stretch of sand.

Las Galeras Beach: Dotted by coconut palms and backed by green trees and a few hotel properties, Las Galeras is a half-moon shaped beach of white sand and turquoise waters.

A second place that beach-goers can consider is La Playita Beach. Fittingly, Calle a la Playita leads directly to La Playita Beach.

Colorada Beach: You can reach Colorada Beach by taking Carretera Playa Colorada right to the shore.

Museums

Whale Museum Of Samana

In case you like to expand your knowledge of unfamiliar places and cultures, you might enjoy visiting a museum during your vacation.

A landmark that often intrigues visitors is Shipwreck Maritime Museum. It is located in Samana, 10.2 mi. South West of central Las Galeras. Visitors are welcomed to come and visit the Shipwreck Maritime Museum, where they will witness some of the more tragic circumstances of maritime history. The majority of the museum is focused on artifacts found from the French Warship "La Scipion" which sank during the American Revolution.

Another landmark that often intrigues visitors is Whale Museum Of Samana. It is located in Samana, 10.8 mi. South West of central Las Galeras. The museum is open daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm from mid-January to mid-March. During the rest of the year they are only open on weekdays from 8:00am to 3:00pm.

Zoos and Aquariums

If the idea of spending some time at the zoo tickles your fancy, you should visit Iguanario Los Tocones. The threatened Rhinoceros Iguana can find a safe haven at the Iguanario Los Tocones, or simply, The Iguana Farm. Oddly, the iguanas are threatened not because of human development or because of predators, but because they are sought after aggressively by zoos around the world.
