Las Galeras boasts one of the few locations on the island that is not filled with all-inclusive resorts. This makes it a great setting for the independent traveler who like to spend their days exploring local sites, and spending time participating in favored activities of the area such as watersports. But just because you like to be in charge of your daily activities doesn't mean that you can or even want to be responsible for driving yourself around.
Local taxi services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which means you'll never have to worry about getting a ride even if you're planning for early morning or late nights. Taxis are also known for being clean, comfortable, and even air conditioned – a luxury that not every taxi service in the Caribbean is known for. Like most taxis around the world; however, they do lack in amenities for children so if you're traveling with young ones, you'll want to be sure to bring the appropriate safety seat or allow them to sit in the lap of an adult.
Taxis here take the form of minivans that seat up to six passengers at a time, and it can be hard to pick one out in a crowd. There are very rarely any markings or signs on the vehicle to let you know that it is available to offer a ride, so most tourists find it easiest to simply call one of the taxi operators in the area and have a driver pick them up. This is also a great way to prevent any random person on the road from pretending to be a cab driver and overcharging you for a ride. When you call, the person on the other end of the line will usually go so far as to describe the vehicle that is picking you up and give you the identification number of the driver so that you can be sure you are getting a ride from the right person.
If you are stuck in a place where you can't spot a cab, call one of the services in the following table.
|Optima Taxi Samana||(829) 351-2315||Marina Avenue - Samana|
|Tour Samana With Terry||(809) 538-3179||Marina Avenue - Samana|
It is hard to predict just how much you'll spend for a taxi ride in Las Galeras because there are no meters or set rates. Instead, you'll get into the vehicle and negotiate the price with your driver. Ask him or her how much he usually charges to get to your desired destination, and if that doesn't sound fair to you, present a counter offer. You'll usually spend around $10(USD) or less, but hardly ever lower than $4.50(USD). Make sure to keep local currency in small bills on hand, because it is rare to come across a driver that offers change.
Taxi drivers can also be hired by the hour for tours, but again, you'll have to settle on the fare with your driver. Some drivers will also be willing to take you to other cities, but do not expect to get a yes every time. Whether you're in it for a quick trip or a tour that lasts for several hours, make sure to tip around 15 percent of your total bill, and add an extra dollar or two for each piece of luggage your driver handles for you.
There is another unique form of transportation in the taxi family called the motoconcho. It is a motorcycle that operates as a taxi offering rides to one to two passengers at a time for short trips around town. It costs $1(USD) per person to ride, or there abouts, and the price doubles after 6:00 p.m.
If you can't or don't want to rent a car during your stay in Las Galeras, taxis are a great alternative. You will still enjoy the privacy of riding in your own vehicle, and get the added bonus of having a knowledgeable local driver chauffeur you around.
