Flying to Long Island

There are two airports available on Long Island

As one of the less busy islands on San Salvador chain, international travel to Long Island takes a little extra work to plan. With no direct flights available, you will have to make an effort to ensure your international and domestic transportation don't overlap and that you have plenty of time to make it through the airport. Knowing what you're looking for makes the whole process easier.

It is important to know that there are two airports on Long Island, each named for the town in which they are located: the Stella Maris Airport (SML) and Deadman's Cay Airport (LGI). Both are small, with just one asphalt runway apiece, and a small building in which tourists can go through customs. The largest determining factor for tourists when deciding which airport to fly into is which is closest to their accommodations.

International travelers currently have only one dependable option available to them when flying to Long Island. This is to fly into the Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau on New Providence Island and fly to Long Island aboard a Bahamasair, Pineapple Air, or Southern Air flight for about $95(USD) per person each way. Occasionally you can fly to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and transfer to a smaller flight aboard Air Sunshine. This leg of the trip takes about 45 minutes and is only available during the high season of tourism, so if you're visiting over the summer this may not be an option.
