A visit to the Puerto Rican coast means the waters will temp you to get in and explore. Snorkeling is a great way to do this, but Luquillo is one of those destinations where you have to play it by ear on a day to day basis to ensure safe conditions. Fortunately, some of the best snorkeling on the island can be found just about 20 minutes away.
Luquillo is located along the north coast, which is where the Atlantic Ocean washes ashore. What this means is that rip tides and strong currents are common, especially during the winter months, so snorkeling can be a dangerous pastime. Even during the summer when the waters are warm and conditions are optimal, you'll have to constantly be aware of the movement of the ocean and be prepared to abandon your snorkeling site if the current picks up.
In addition to the unpredictable conditions, avid snorkelers agree that most of the sites here are lacking. Yes, you'll find the occasional reef, and perhaps a few beds of sea grass with active fish swimming about looking for something to eat, but for the most part, the underwater landscape is just so-so.
For this reason, most tourists head to Fajardo for their snorkeling adventure. The town is just a short drive away and known for offering the best underwater sites on the entire island. In addition to calm waters and great visibility, you'll have the chance to see octopus, rays, tarpon, sea turtles, puffer fish, and so much more. A snorkeling tour hosted by a local or adventure tour guide is a great way to get to experience this environment, but you can just as easily rent a car, drive over on your own, and snorkel from the beach.
If you looking for a business offering snorkeling gear, excursions or similar services, you might want to contact Casa del Mar. They offer two different snorkeling tour options. The first is three hours long and takes guests to Lobbs Natural Park where they can snorkel with or without help from the guide. They are located within Central Fajardo, easily reached by taxi Southeast of central Luquillo.
Some details about two firms that provide snorkeling related services can be seen down below.
