Like many destinations on the island of Dominica, Mahaut is known for its gorgeous landscape and bountiful nature that keeps tourists busy exploring for days. The first step to getting to see these sites is to look into your air travel options.
Don't be fooled as you begin looking into flights to Mahaut. You'll notice that there are two airports on the island, and it will appear that only one is in use. That one is the Melville Hall (DOM) Airport located in St. Andrew Parish. The airport, though an international facility, actually only welcomes flights from within the Caribbean at this point in time. That means anyone visiting from the United States, Canada, Europe, and beyond will have to first land on another island (most often Puerto Rico, Antigua, and St. Maarten) before making the final descent to Dominica. The airport is open daily until 10:00 p.m. and has a small snack bar and customs area.
The island's other airport is called Canefield. It is located close to Mahaut, but is actually only used for courier flights.
See the table below for a listing of scheduled air service from airports in the Caribbean region. Even if there aren't any flights directly from your favorite airport, making a connection through another regional airport might prove to be a fine option.

If you're visiting from Canada or France, a picture ID is all you need to make it through customs; however, those visiting from elsewhere will need a valid passport. Additionally, anyone who lives outside of the Commonwealth of Nations will be required to obtain a visa unless they are to remain on the island for less than 24 hours.
It takes 45 minutes to get to Mahaut from Melville Hall, and the drive is considered to be a perilous ride by many. If you want to rent a car for your stay, it is recommended that you do so once you've arrived in town, and hire someone to get you to your accommodations instead. You'll find taxis are readily available, and if you've got minimal luggage you can take a bus, which is available from the main road just in front of the airport for $0.55(USD).
Those who insist on driving themselves will go northeast on Wiers Road, turn left, and take the first exit in the roundabout. You will then turn left onto Edward Oliver Leblanc Highway and remain on the highway until you reach Mahaut.
Although you may have to book a flight with a layover in order to get to the Nature Island, flying is still the most convenient and least expensive option for most visitors. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to compare departure times and prices, and you should be able to book a flight that works perfectly for you without any trouble.
