As a quite village on the west coast of Dominica, many tourists choose to stay here to get away from the busier cities that draw huge amounts of tourism. Although the town is small and serene, many modern amenities are available, such as taxi services. If you aren't renting a car, you'll likely have the opportunity to hail a cab at least once during your stay.
In Dominica, taxis are easily found when you arrive at the airport, at the Roseau Cruise Dock, in popular resort areas, and around the island's favorite sites and attractions. In Mahaut, these spots are restaurants and beaches. You'll find them in the form of minibuses with the letters “H” or “HA” on the license plates, drivers in uniform, and their credentials posted somewhere in the vehicle. These are all ways of confirming that you are stepping into a legally licensed taxi.
While you're out and about, you should be able to raise your arm and wave a taxi driver in your direction. If you don't see a cab in the midst, you can try to contact one.
If you can't seem to find a taxi, or want one to come to you at your location, you can call one of these cab companies:
|(767) 448-6460||Croner of Corke & George Street - Roseau|
|(767) 448-4394||Louviere - Roseau|
|(767) 448-2891||17 Old Street - Roseau|
If you have any further questions, contact the Dominica Taxi Association at 767-449-8533.
While you may be used to a ticking meter when you take a cab in your home town, in Mahaut, taxis offer rates pre-set by the government. You can expect to spend anywhere from $15 to $45(USD) depending upon where your final destination is, and your driver will be able to tell you the exact rate before you even take off. Though you might be aware of the cost of the trip before you ride, it is still wise to confirm with the driver, just to ensure there is no confusion later on.
In addition to paying for the trip, you will also want to bring enough money to pay your driver a tip. This is not required, of course, but a great deal of your drivers income depends on this gratuity, so if they've done a good job, a reward of between 15 and 20 percent of your final bill is advised.
There is no better way to learn about Mahaut and the rest of the Dominica than through the words of a local. Taxi drivers have a keen sense of what the island has to offer since they spend so much time traversing it. Additionally, many are trained to offer tours and have a wealth of knowledge about top locales. For between $70 and $90(USD) for up to five hours you can hire a taxi driver to create a tour of the area catered directly to your needs.
If you aren't renting a car in Mahaut, the next best way to get around the area is to hire a driver. Sure, the price can add up, but the ease of travel and the knowledge that your driver specializes in knowing the roads is worth every penny.
