Camping is widely available on the island of Martinique, but it's also strongly regulated by local governments from location to location around the island.

Camping is available from June 24 through September 30 almost anywhere on the island, in both forests and on beaches. However, travelers should avoid what Martinique has termed "indiscriminate" camping.

Travelers in and around Sainte-Anne may camp at either Cap Chevalier or - on the beach - at Salines. To find out more about camping in this region, contact the camping association: "Vivre et Camper à Sainte-Anne" (To Live and Camp in Sainte-Anne), at Pointe Marin, by phone at 05-96-76-95-52 and 05-96-76-72-79 or by Fax at 05-96-76-97-82.

Those visiting Le Vauclin may camp year round at Pointe Faula. These year-round camps also include showers and toilets. To reach the camp at Pointe Faula travelers may call 596-596-74-40-40. Another year-round camping location is Le Nid Tropical at Anse à l'Ane, in Trios Illets. They can be reached by phone at 596-596-68-31-30 or by fax at 596-596-68-47-43.

Le Vauclin and Anse à l'Ane both offer other camp sites to travelers. Those who are looking for a stay on the beach can stop in at Macabou in Le Vauclin. Courbaril Camping is also available in Anse à l'Ane. Call Courbaril Camping for more information at 596-596-68-32-21.

Eco-tourism is also available, though it's less organized than the camping. Travelers looking for ecologically-oriented stays and activities will be able to choose from a wide variety of hiking and biking adventures, snorkeling and scuba diving outings, and island tours. Because of the rich natural diversity, Martinique is a great place for nature lovers to tour. Click here to read more about Martinique's nature sites.

Campers can find a spot to pitch their tent year round, though most will close in the off-season.
