The Cost of Renting a Car

The cost of a rental car can be anywhere from $40 to $70(USD) a day, plus taxes, fees, and insurance. One of the most important fees to be aware of is a tax on age, which adds between $10 and $25(USD) a day to the cost of your rental if you are between the ages of 21 and 24. Also be aware that many companies require a deposit that could be up to $500(USD) that will be returned to you when you return the vehicle. While most agencies will charge this to your credit card, some local agencies do not accept cards and you will be asked to pay in cash.

Different agencies can charge very different rates so it can be worth your time to shop around. The low rates in the tables are only available from the least costly local firms when plenty of cars are on hand. The high rates are what you might need to pay at one of the busier agencies during the high season.

...a chance to see the countryside...

Although there is an airport in Mayagüez, many tourists choose to save money by renting a car from the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan and make the two hour journey by car. To get to Mayagüez from San Juan, take the northern route which brings you through the recently expanded De Diego Expressway also known as Route 22 as well as the older Route 2. This will give you a view of what driving in Puerto Rico is like. Most tourists find it to be similar to driving in the United States, where traffic moves on the right side of the road, and even the older roads are relatively well maintained. On occasion you'll encounter a road that has succumbed to erosion and has a few cracks and pot holes.

Traffic along these major roadways is not terribly heavy, but the trip will give you a chance to see the countryside, most especially if take the southern route which has you drive along modern Route 52 around Ponce, where you'll access Mayagüez via Route 2.

Along the way you'll have the opportunity to get accustomed to driving on the island. A few things to note include the fact that distance signs are listed in kilometers, yet speed limits are noted in miles per hour. Gasoline is sold by the liter instead of by the gallon, and police cars are always required to have their lights flashing whenever they are in motion.
