Public transportation is virtually non-existent on Middle Caicos, and unfortunately, local taxi drivers aren't the most punctual of providers. For this reason, many tourists choose to take control of their transportation needs by renting a car for their island getaway.
If you plan to avoid taxis during your stay on Middle Caicos, you'll want to make plans to pick up your rental car directly at the airport. Some agencies will even meet you directly upon clearing customs and guide you through the rental process. In general, most agencies on the island require that you be 25-years-old or older to rent a car with them, although some will go down to just 21, and you will need a valid driver's license. That is all that is required of you before you can take possession of the vehicle. Of course, it is the discretion of each agency to create their own rules and regulations, so make sure to call in advance and confirm that you meet all of the qualifications set forth by you rental agency of choice.
happens to be the only rental service for which we have information. Be sure to reach them at (649) 232-2137, or visit them just outside the heart of Middle Caicos.
Every rental incurs a $16(USD) tax by the government, and you will also want to make sure to pay the $10 to $20(USD) extra in order to insure the vehicle against accident and damage. Your daily rate specifically for the vehicle will range from $40 to $215(USD), and this price will depend on any deals the agency is running as well as the type of vehicle you rent and any extras you include like a navigation system.
The biggest challenge for most tourists staying on Middle Caicos will be balancing the fact that traffic moves on the left side of the road, like in Europe, but most cars have right hand drive, like in the United States.
With little metropolitan development, the road conditions on the island are not what they could be. Instead, you'll encounter a lot of dirt or gravel roads and plenty of cracks and pot holes on roads that are paved. Road signs are nearly non-existent, and there are absolutely no traffic lights to speak of. Speed limits range from 20 to 40 miles per hour, but locals are not known for following the posted speed. Traffic is not an issue, but when you do encounter another driver on the road, chances are they'll speed up and try and pass you. Don't take his as a sign of disrespect; it is simply the way of the road on this otherwise sleepy island.
One of the best things about renting a car on Middle Caicos is that it affords drivers the opportunity to visit nearby North Caicos via a sandy causeway. Of all the roads on the island, this is perhaps the worst due to poor construction initially and damage done by Hurricane Ike in 2008. Still, it is drivable and makes day trips a possibility.
The most reliable form of transportation on Middle Caicos is, without a doubt, a rental car. Easy regulations, reasonable prices, and freedom are additional items to list in the pro column. If these are important to you, reserve your rental now, because renting a car for your Middle Caicos getaway is the obvious choice for you.
