Because tourism has not taken hold so fully as it has in other towns and cities in the Dominican Republic, taxis are not a major form of transportation in Monte Cristi. That does not mean that visitors who don't want to or can't rent a car are out of luck. Another form of private transportation does exist here.
While you may see a taxi roaming the streets of Monte Cristi on occasion, this is an extremely rare event. What you will find is that there are a number of motoconcho drivers zipping around and waiting for passengers on every bust street corner.
Motoconchos are motorcycle taxis. Drivers are known to fit up to five passengers on the back of their bikes, plus their luggage, at once, and take them from place to place in town. This can be a fun way to get around, but, because there are no helmets, visitors are warned to travel at their own risk.

If you do happen upon a taxi in Monte Cristi, you'll have to discuss the rate with your driver and come upon a price that you agree on because there are no meters or pre-set rates here. Motoconcho rides, meanwhile, are between $0.50 and $1(USD) per person. Whichever service you choose, make sure to tip your driver for their time and effort.
