Doctor's Cave beach is rich in history and was first open in 1906. Dr. Alexander James McCatty donated this small stretch of sand, which could only be only accessed through a cave, hence the beach's name. The beach was founded as a bathing club near the seaside. The cave has since been destroyed by a hurricane, and the beach is no longer an exclusive bathing club, but a festive oceanfront location where there's always a party atmosphere. There is an admission fee of $5(USD) for adults, $2.50(USD) for children age 12 and under, and the beach is open daily 8:30am until sunset.

Positioned a quarter mile north-northwest of downtown Montego Bay, Doctor's Cave Beach is on the North West edge of Jamaica. You should consider stopping by even if you are not staying in the vicinity. If you prefer to escape the buzz of the city, it's good to know that the majority of beaches in Jamaica are known for their privacy and seclusion. This atmosphere is not for everyone, though. If you seek a fun and active spot, you're better off trying a beach like Doctor's Cave Beach, with a more upbeat atmosphere.

Amenities and Ambiance

The waters of Doctor's Cave Beach are fed by crystal clear mineral springs, and these extremely gentle waves stay at about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The beach's golden sands glimmer in the sultry island sun, and the inviting turquoise waters are perfect for swimming. Sometimes you can even spot brightly colored tropical fish swimming close to the water's surface.

You could always try the restaurant right on the water, if it suits your taste. There are a lot of dining experiences to be enjoyed in Jamaica, but dining at the beach can be a particularly memorable one. So, you may wish to consider getting pre-packed lunches from your hotel if they offer them. Or, on your way to the beach you could grab some carry-out from a casual dining spot.

The concession stand at this spot is also an option. On some days, it may be possible to get lunch from one of the local vendors who typically set up shop here.

For your convenience, restrooms are available at Doctor's Cave Beach. Shower facilities are available, so you can rinse off before heading back to your hotel. During the 1920s it was believed that the waters at Doctor's Cove had curative powers, and people from all over the world came to bathe in these waters. Now the beach is a popular place to visit with families, and its shores are almost always packed, especially during the winter months.

Though, you will need to realize that even if there will be options for comforts on location if you go to Doctor's Cave Beach, it happens to be located within a relatively urbanized region. With this in mind, if your ideal vacation means these amenities are a deciding factor, it will be an appropriate reason to show up earlier in the morning well before the crowds do or perhaps go to a different beach away from the major areas. Or it's possible you may risk all of the services becoming overcrowded.
