Doctor's Cave beach is rich in history and was first open in 1906. Dr. Alexander James McCatty donated this small stretch of sand, which could only be only accessed through a cave, hence the beach's name. The beach was founded as a bathing club near the seaside. The cave has since been destroyed by a hurricane, and the beach is no longer an exclusive bathing club, but a festive oceanfront location where there's always a party atmosphere. There is an admission fee of $5(USD) for adults, $2.50(USD) for children age 12 and under, and the beach is open daily 8:30am until sunset.

Located a quarter mile north-northwest of downtown Montego Bay, Doctor's Cave Beach is on the North West coast of Jamaica. You should consider stopping by whether or not you're staying in the immediate vicinity. Jamaica's beaches are known for being hidden gems with potential for deep relaxation. While these beaches are a perfect fit for some, those who like to keep active will find there's much more variety at Doctor's Cave Beach.

Amenities and Ambiance

The waters of Doctor's Cave Beach are fed by crystal clear mineral springs, and these extremely gentle waves stay at about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The beach's golden sands glimmer in the sultry island sun, and the inviting turquoise waters are perfect for swimming. Sometimes you can even spot brightly colored tropical fish swimming close to the water's surface.

Also, you have the option of trying the restaurant located right on Doctor's Cave Beach. There are several types of dining experiences that vacationers can enjoy in Jamaica, but eating at the beach can be especially fun. Did you know that some hotels are happy to pack picnic lunches for their guests? Or, you could find just what you need from cafes and street vendors en route to the beach.

The concession stand on-site could come in handy, even if you plan to have lunch elsewhere. If available, you could also try local specialties from one of the mobile vendors who set up shop at the beach.

This beach has public restrooms——something you'll appreciate if you spend more than a couple of hours here. Showers are provided for visitors, so you can rinse off the sand. During the 1920s it was believed that the waters at Doctor's Cove had curative powers, and people from all over the world came to bathe in these waters. Now the beach is a popular place to visit with families, and its shores are almost always packed, especially during the winter months.

Even so, make sure you see that while there will be a few conveniences available if you go to Doctor's Cave Beach, it happens to be found inside a commonly visited area. What this means is that if you think the amenities are a crucial feature, it will be a smart motivator to visit earlier in the day well before the crowds fill up or perhaps try a beach in a more remote area. If you arrive later, you could run the risk of all those comforts becoming too busy.
