If you're considering using the bus as your main means of getting around the Dominican Republic, there is no better home base than Nagua.
Nagua serves as a major transportation hub for guaguas, which are local mini buses that travel up and down the coastal highway as was as to several cities towards the center of the country. You can catch a guagua by waving one down on the highway – just make sure it is headed in the direction that you need to go in. Coastal guaguas drive by about every 15 minutes, why those traveling inland come by about every half hour.
There are also full-sized, air conditioned buses that travel to Santo Domingo once every half hour between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. for less than $8(USD). A bus to Samana is about $1.50(USD) and leaves from Nagua at 7:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.
