Fort Montagu

As the oldest still standing fort on New Providence, Fort Montagu is rich in history. Its most famous event was when the fledgling US Navy captured the fort in 1776, took its cannons and brought them to then General Washington's army.


When the fort was originally built it stood tall and proud, containing barracks, a guard room, a powder magazine, and more. Now, the fort stands in ruins, but tourists are drawn to the military attraction. Walk right into the fort and climb the stone steps so that you can look out over the harbor, where you will see what it must have been like to stand watch over your beloved island.

Fort Montagu is located in Nassau, so those staying in this region of the Bahamas will have easy site access during their visit. Even though this location isn't swarming with tourists, you will still find a reasonable selection of lodging options to choose from.

Location and What's Nearby

Spry explorers might also be engaged by the region because of the ample availability of open-air options. Tourists who are interested in testing their aptitude around the green, can do so at the closest option, which is Royal Blue. Uneventful hours can also be spent at Montagu Bay Beach, the most close-by beach. While the options above may be the easiest to get to, there will still be a wide selection of equally enjoyable recreation options. Historic site visitors will discover additional indoor attractions in the vicinity. Located only a short distance away are two more attractions--The Retreat National Park and Malcom's Park.

The fort is always open to the public, but guided tours are available between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday.
