As the oldest still standing fort on New Providence, Fort Montagu is rich in history. Its most famous event was when the fledgling US Navy captured the fort in 1776, took its cannons and brought them to then General Washington's army.
When the fort was originally built it stood tall and proud, containing barracks, a guard room, a powder magazine, and more. Now, the fort stands in ruins, but tourists are drawn to the military attraction. Walk right into the fort and climb the stone steps so that you can look out over the harbor, where you will see what it must have been like to stand watch over your beloved island.
