As a popular tourist destination, it isn't hard to come across a taxi in Negril, and many visitors prefer to use this mode of transportation to get from place to place because of the hazardous and unfamiliar road conditions. Whether you plan to hail a cab during your Negril vacation or not, it is wise to be familiar with the process.
In Negril, charter taxis are available to pick you up and take you and your party on a private ride to your destination of choice for one flat rate, which is probably similar to the taxis you are used to back home. There is, however, another type of taxi on the ground called the route taxi. These taxis offer services that look a lot like what a public bus system would offer, running on set routes, picking up as many passengers as they can along the way until the vehicle is full, and charging per person rather than per trip. You'll be able to tell the difference between the two types of taxis by their license plates. Charters have red license plates with white lettering, and route taxis have white license plates. Both will have “PP” or “PPV” on the plates, which is a quick and easy way for you to determine if you are getting into a properly licensed and insured vehicle. It is not uncommon for locals to illegally try and offer taxi services, and looking for those letters is a good way to ensure you aren't being swindled.
When you arrive at the airport, you'll easily find taxis waiting for you just outside of Immigrations. Throughout Negril they remain posted near beaches, accommodations, restaurants, and popular attractions. Finding a taxi shouldn't be difficult, however, there are times where you may need to call and have one pick you up in a particular area.

...specially priced island tours...
Along with offering transportation, most of Negril's charter taxis also offer specially priced island tours. If you get along well with your driver, ask if he or she is a trained tour guide. If he shows you his Jamaica Union of Travellers Association (JUTA) certificate, you know you're riding with a driver who knows his stuff. You can set up a time for him to pick you up later in your trip and show you all of the attractions that you'd like to see.
In Negril, you'll find that rates are almost always predetermined. The government sets the fare for route taxis, while charters are permitted to decide on their own charges. You'll never be charged by the hour, which is convenient. Don't be afraid to ask if there are any deals or discounts, but be respectful and don't be pushy. Also note that charter taxis accept U.S. Dollars while route taxis will typically only take Jamaican Dollars.
Because prices differ from charter to charter and on different routes, it is hard to say for sure exactly how much you'll spend on transportation. To save some money, you can opt for the shared bus option. Costing $24 to get to or from Montego Bay, this option is cheaper than the more traditional taxi, though is also less private, slower, and generally does not deviate from a predetermined itinerary.
The following chart lists some taxi rates for the area.
|Typical Cost (USD)||Location A||Location B|
|$ 65.00 - $ 100.00||Montego Bay||Negril|
|$ 134.25 - $ 154.50||Negril Beach Hotel Zone||Falmouth|
