Traveling to Old San Juan by Airplane

Modern arrangements get tourists quickly to historic Old San Juan

Tourists heading to Old San Juan will have an easy time making their travel arrangements thanks to the fact that the island of Puerto Rico's major international airport is located just a handful of miles away. It takes little more than a quick cab ride or a rental car to make it to their final destination.

About the San Juan Airport

When the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) opened in May of 1955, it was as the newest, most modern facility in Puerto Rico, built to be able to land the large jumbo jets that were becoming the way to travel. Over the years, the airport has continued to expand in order to keep up with its modern reputation, and to this day it is the hub of travel not only on Puerto Rico, but in the Caribbean as well. Between the fact that almost every international air traveler will pass through Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport before heading off to their final destination, many travelers going elsewhere in the Caribbean will fist fly into this airport aboard a jumbo jet, transfer to a smaller plane, then fly to a destination with an airport not so well-equipped to handle such big planes.

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport has one 9,783 foot long asphalt runway and one 8,016 foot long concrete runway, four terminals, a huge parking lot, a food court, several shops, and a collection of conference rooms.
