After years of being used as an army barracks building, the Ballaja Barracks was given to the government of Puerto Rico in 1976 to be used as a cultural and educational center. After several years of preparation and restoration, the Barracks opened to the public, hosting a museum, a number of educational programs, and more.

What to Expect

Because the Ballaja Barrackers were literally once an army barracks housing over a thousand soldiers and their families, this spot is of considerable historical relevance, even if you don't shop up for a tour of the museum or a live performance. Still, since you arrive, you may as well look around. The first floor houses a dance school, a music school, and a publishing house. The second floor is the location of El Museo de las Americas, the most popular attraction here, and the third floor is home to the State Office of Historic Conservation and the Puerto Rico Academy of the Spanish Language.

Set on three acres of land, the building itself takes up 7,700 meters and includes a vast and peaceful courtyard.
