Old San Juan is one of the areas on Puerto Rico where renting a car simply is not necessary. Most attractions, shopping centers, and restaurants are near enough to each other that walking is a possibility, and the public transportation system is very good for those times when you'll be traveling a greater distance.
Taxis are easy to spot on the streets of San Juan. Most are white with the words "Taxi Turistico" scrawled across the front, and others, called Painted Taxis, would stand out in any setting. In an effort to preserve some taxis that were still running perfectly but looked worn on the outside, taxis were given to local artists who were asked to fix them up. These artists put their own spin on the exterior of the vehicle, painting unique designs in a variety of movements. Some taxis will have a very classic design on them, while others will be covered in colorful graffiti. These vehicles are a hit and certainly add to the landscape of the city.
If you would rather make reservations for a taxi to meet you at a specific location and time, you can get in touch with any of these these taxi companies.
