The Caribbean is known for poor driving conditions and ancient rental cars, but things in Oranjestad are different. Although the roads can become congested (especially during rush hour), they are in quite good condition and most foreign drivers will easily be able to find their way around.
The process for renting a car in Aruba is quite similar to what visitors from the United States are used to. There are numerous international chains and several local agencies that offer a variety of makes and models, the rules and regulations are similar, and the prices aren't too pricy to boot.
Most tourists arrive inthrough the which is located in Oranjestad, and immediately pick up their rental car before heading to their lodgings. When you exit the airport, head to the bus terminal and directly across the street you will see multiple rental car agencies all in a row awaiting your business. Although it is wise to reserve your rental in advance, you can walk right into one of the shops and rent a car right then and there.
Not everyone wants to pick up their rental right away. Plenty of hotels offer shuttles from their airport, and many tourists choose to instead take the shuttle, get settled in, and have their pre-arranged rental car brought to them at their hotel. Not all rental agencies do this, so make sure to ask.
The most common cars available for rent in Aruba are small models known for being gas savers, such as a Toyota Yaris. If you want or need a different vehicle, such as a Lexus for style and comfort, or a Jeep for off-roading, make sure to reserve your vehicle in advance. Always be sure to check that your rental has air conditioning as well, because not all rentals are automatically equipped with that option.

...get where you need to go...
Tourists from the United States, especially those who live in mid- to large- cities will find driving in Oranjestad to be very close to what they are used to back home. Traffic moves one the right side of the road and the streets can get pretty busy, especially in the center of town, and even more so during rush hour. Local law insists that motorcyclists wear helmets and all people in a car wear a seat belt at all times while the vehicle it in motion. All children under the age of 10 should ride in the back seat, and those under the age of five should be properly restrained in a child safety seat. Note that unlike in the United States where you can make right turns at a red light, in Aruba this is prohibited.
The roads in Aruba are typically well-kept, especially in Oranjestad since it is such a populated area, and road signs in town will help you get where you need to go. However, if you travel outside of the city, you'll notice the infrastructure weakening just slightly, and the road signs becoming less and less prominent. The island's main road, L.G. Smith Boulevard, runs along the entire length of the island's west coast, including through Oranjestad. This road is well-lit and has plenty of signs directing you to hotels, restaurants, and popular attractions.
The roads to the north can be rugged at times, and some dirt roads are common here, so make sure to rent a vehicle with good suspension if you have the desire to explore this area of the island. Also, if you plan to make any trips to the center of the island, be prepared to encounter animals on the roadways. Goats in particular are often seen standing in the middle of the street, giving no indication that they will be moving any time soon. In some cases, you'll be able to move around them, while in others, you will simply have to wait them out.
Speed limits do exist here, though they are noted in kilometers per hour, rather than miles per hour. Typical speed limited at 40 kilometers per hour in urban areas and 60 to 80 kilometers per hour out of town. School zones and residential areas will note even lower speed limits. Should the unthinkable occur and you get in an accident, leave the vehicle where it is an call 1-0-0 for the police, or 9-1-1 if it is an emergency.
In order to rent a vehicle in Aruba, you must be between the ages of 21 and 25, and typically no older than 70, you'll need a driver's license from your country of origin that has been active for two years, and you'll need to be prepared to put down a deposit of up to $500(USD) on your credit card. All of these things vary by agency, so make sure you discuss the specifics with the location you choose to rent your vehicle with. Rentals will typically cost between $40 and $65(USD) a day for a compact car, and up to $80(USD) for a sports utility vehicles or a van. Deals can be found in the low season of tourism, and some hotels even offer packages that include a rental from a local agency. Also, plan for an extra charge if you add insurance to your rental package – and it is always recommended that you do.
Different firms will sometimes charge very different rates so it can be worth your time to shop around. The low rates in the tables are usually only available from the least costly local firms when plenty of cars are on hand. The highest rates are what you can expect during the busiest time of year.
