Driving in an unfamiliar place can be overwhelming and difficult. The roads and driving conditions in Oranjestad are not as bad off as other places in the Caribbean and even on the island, but many tourists still feel uncomfortable driving themselves around. This is where the very organized taxi system in the city comes in handy.

Taxi Companies

Despite being the capital city and home to the largest population of citizens on the island of Aruba, taxis are not seen roaming about the streets as frequently as one might expect, and they tend to blend in because they are regular cars only set apart by the “TX” in the license plates. It's possible you'll luck out and come across one if you're at the airport, walking out of your hotel, or at a popular attraction, but otherwise you'll have the best luck if you call ahead and have a taxi pick you up at a specified location.

The following table enables you to get a hold of a local taxi service.

Taxi Services
Name Phone Location
Arubus (297) 584-2300 Sabana Blanco 67 - 1.3 mi. (2.1 km) East-Southeast of Oranjestad
Diamond Taxi Service (297) 587-2300 Salinja Cerca 27 A - 1.0 mi. (1.6 km) Northwest of Oranjestad
Port Taxi Stand -- Downtown Oranjestad
Professional Taxi Service (297) 588-0035 Cumana 20 - 1.0 mi. (1.6 km) Northwest of Oranjestad
Taxi Address Service (297) 587-4011 L G Smith Boulevard 234 - 1.0 mi. (1.6 km) Northwest of Oranjestad

You can then arrange stops and pick up times with your driver for the whole day if you like, giving the driver the freedom to transport others while you explore a certain attraction or have a meal, then return to get you at the specified time.

Rates, Fares, and Fees

The most important thing to know about taxis in Oranjestad is that they are not metered. Instead, each pick up and drop off point has a specified fare, for example, the trip from the airport to Oranjestad's city center of $18(USD). The cost is set for the entire cab, so you can have up to five people split the fare.

...some extra prices to take into consideration...

Do note that there are some extra prices to take into consideration. For example, a ride on Sunday or a holiday will cost an additional $3(USD), as will a ride between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. From the airport, you'll be allotted space in the trunk for one piece of luggage and a carry on item per person. Anything more than that is $2(USD) per piece, and anyone who needs to use the trunk that is not traveling to or from the airport will receive a flat $3(USD) rate. Another $3(USD) is charged per minute that the driver has to wait on you as you run an errand or go into an attraction, so many people choose to hire their driver by the hour, which is $45(USD). Be aware that you may not get into a cab shirtless, wet, or in messy clothing. If the seat gets wet or dirty, you will be charged $50(USD) to replace it.

As far as gratuities are concerned, Oranjestad's taxi drivers depend upon tip money for their livelihood. If you've had a good experience with your driver, show your appreciation by tippiing 15 percent of your total bill.

Because taxis are so well regulated, and are quite inexpensive if you're traveling in a group willing to split the bill, many tourists choose to forgo renting a car in favor of hiring a local who knows his or her way around. If this appeals to you, make sure to keep the numbers of local companies on hand so that you are never left stranded.
