In Oyster Pond, sailing may be the most preferred mode of transportation, but to get around and see the sites of St. Maarten and St. Martin most fully, renting a car may make more sense.  Fortunately, there are plenty of rental agencies throughout the island, and you have the option of renting for just a day or two if you won't need a car on hand the whole time you visit.

The Cost of Renting a Car

The cost to rent a car in Oyster Pond is very low to start.  Standard vehicles with no extras are $30(USD) a day, though, the more features you add and the bigger the vehicle gets, the more you'll pay.  You can also choose additional insurance coverage for $10(USD) a day.

Driving in Oyster Pond

Oyster Pond's roads are narrow, but they are pretty well-maintained, so this is a destination that most foreigners feel confident driving in.  Traffic moves on the right side of the road like in the United States, but it is common for locals to park right along the street and you'll have to navigate around them.  Things to be aware of when you drive here:  seat belts are required and roundabouts and speed bumps are common.

There is at least one gas station right in Oyster Pond, but the island has more than you might expect for its small size, so you shouldn't have to worry about running out of gas in an unknown area.  Do be aware that you likely will have to pay cash for your fuel.
