Snorkeling Around Oyster Pond

Oyster Pond is one place that does not have any notable snorkeling sites along St. Maarten's coast; however, just a few minutes of travel time by car and you'll be in the presence of one of the most talked about beaches for snorkeling.

It is nearby Dawn Beach Snorkel that most visitors turn to when they are looking for a quick and easy day of snorkeling near Oyster Pond.  You can swim out just a few yards from the shore and encounter a wonderful reef teeming with life.

If you'd like to explore more of Sint Maarten's waters, you'll generally find most areas to be ideal for snorkeling with waters that range in temperature from 77 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit and visibility that is anywhere from 60 to 100 feet deep.  The government's work to protect the underwater world has also aided in ensuring the health of the reef systems that surround the island as well as the sea creatures that dwell in them.

If snorkeling Dawn Beach Snorkel isn't enough for you, you can take things even further by signing up for a snorkeling tour with a local watersports shop or tour guide.  There are several small islands and cays off the coast of Sint Maarten where the snorkeling is said to be even better than what you'll find near the shore.  There is even a designated snorkeling park at one of these isles.

Snorkeling Sites

If you'd like to explore below the water's surface you might want to visit Ilet Pinel. There are three main snorkeling areas on the south side of this island: a shallow area near the dock, the beach, and a designated snorkeling trail. The snorkeling trail is actually not considered to be one of the better sites in the area, and the beach is devoid of coral. This snorkeling site is located easily reached by taxi North of central Oyster Pond.

Ilet Pinel is another snorkeling spot you might enjoy. Thanks to its strong current, this site is one that is only recommended for strong swimmers and advanced snorkelers. If you can swing it, you'll be treated to a unique underwater habitat that features corals that bend to the will of the water. Be on the lookout for fire coral and sea urchins and steer clear.

A third place to consider is Cul de Sac Bay. Surrounding an undeveloped island are numerous marine habitats to be explored. Hard corals are covered in soft corals, fish hide in boulders and seagrass, and because so much of it is shallow, snorkelers will have a ball here. Fish you may encounter include scorpionfish, parrotfish, and trumpetfish.

A fourth location where you can go snorkeling is Dawn Beach. A reef runs parallel to the beach, and you can paddle out and see schools of fish swimming about when the current is calm. If you want to check it out, you'll find this site located in southern Oyster Pond.
