Many tourists staying in Oyster Pond choose to skip renting a car and make plans to spend their days relaxing on the beach and getting around on foot. Unlike Philipsburg, however, there are not tons of shops and restaurants lining the streets, so taking a taxi will often serve as an important means of transportation.
Moreso than any of the other popular destinations in St. Maarten, in Oyster Pond you may want to keep a list of local taxi companies on hand. Though it is easy to find a taxi at the top tourist spots, like on the beach, if you're in a more obscure, quiet location, you'll need to be able to call and request a ride. When you do find a taxi on the street, make sure to check the license plate and ensure that the tag reads “TAXI.” This will let you know that the cab is properly licensed, and because taxis blend in with other cars on the street, helps visitors to more easily determine which vehicles to flag down.
If you'd like to call ahead for a taxi to meet you at a preset time and location, you can get in touch with one of these the following cab companies.
|(059) 087-3105||Quartier d'Orleans - French Cul de Sac|
|(059) 087-3166||Quartier d'Orleans - 2.1 mi. (3.4 km) South West of Orient Bay|
The way the fares are determined in Oyster Pond and throughout the rest of the island makes it easy for tourists to plan their budget. The island is split into several zones, and checking out a zone rate chart issued by the government will allow you to see exactly how much you'll spend getting from one destination to another. You can pick up a rate chart from the front desk of your hotel, or simply ask to see it when you hail a cab.
As you view the charts, make sure to keep in mind that they were created with just two passengers in mind. Each extra person in the cab is $4, and every piece of luggage is $1(USD). Rates also go up overnight. From 10:00 p.m. to midnight it is an extra 25 percent, and from midnight to 6:00 a.m. You'll pay an additional 50 percent. You'll also want to leave room in your budget for gratuities. These days, about 15 percent of your final bill is the normal fee.
