Renting a car for your Patillas getaway gives you the freedom to get up and go whenever the mood strikes. Although renting a car in this town is not a difficult task, there are still a few things you'll want to review before you embark on your vacation, such as the cost, the rental process, and information about driving local roads.

When you rent a car to drive to Patillas, you'll have to choose between local businesses and international chains. There are benefits to both. With local businesses, you'll typically enjoy more personalized services, as it is common to encounter the owner working behind the desk, and deals are often better. Local businesses rely on word of mouth to get their name out to other tourists, so they rely on you to have a good experience and let your friends know, so they aim to please. The benefit of an international chain is that they are more accessible, they have names you've known and heard, and feel you can trust, and they are more prepared to handle any situation that should arise such as a car stranded on the side of the road.

You will have a hard time finding a rental agency inside Patillas. Instead, many tourist will save themselves of the trouble and just rent a car from San Juan or Isla Verde.

Driving in Patillas is not so different than driving in the United States. Traffic moves on the right side of the road, and most laws and standard rules of the road are the same. As an added bonus, Puerto Rico is known for having some of the best roads in the region, which means you won't encounter as many cracks, pot holes, and even dirt roads as many other locations in the Caribbean. Roads here are paved, well parked with directional signs, and lit at night.

You will notice that there are a few differences on the roads here, beginning with the fact that police cars are required to have their lights flashing the entire time they are in motion. Distances are noted in kilometers, while speed limits are in miles per hour, and gasoline is sold by the liter instead of by the gallon.
