Taxis in Philipsburg

Philipsburg is a top taxi destination on the island

Whether you arrive on the island by plane, cruise ship, or ferry, chances are your first experience with local ground transportation will be to take a taxi.  While some people do decide to rent a car, taxis offer tourists the chance to sit back and enjoy the view while they let a local driver do the navigating.

Taxi Companies

Philipsburg may just be the easiest place on the entire island to find a cab.  Because this city is a point of entry for every major form of transportation, there are always drivers on the street ready to get travelers from one point to the next.  It is especially easy to find a ride from the airport and in Wathey Square.  If, by chance, you can't find a taxi on the street, you can contact the taxi dispatch and arrange to have a driver pick you up.  Do make sure to check that the license plate for the letters “TAXI” to be sure you're getting into a licensed vehicle.

Rates, Fares, and Fees

Drivers in Philipsburg accept US dollars as their main form of payment, which is great news for those traveling from the United States.  You'll notice that there are no meters in the cabs.  This is because rates are set by the government, and drivers keep updated rate cards on hand to show passengers how much it will cost them to get from one place to another.

These prices are based on two person occupancy, so if you've got extra riders it will be an extra $4(USD) per person.  On top of that, luggage is $1(USD) per piece.  If you travel between the hours of 10:00 p.m. And midnight, fares go up by 25 percent, and then, between midnight and 6:00 a.m., they go up by 50 percent.  Don't forget to tip your driver!  About 15 percent of your total bill is the norm.

There are a number of reasons someone might decide that renting a car is not for them.  If you decide you want to skip that form of transportation, you'll be happy to know that taxis come highly recommended.
