Transportation in Port of Spain is not hard to come by, which means that visitors have plenty of choices available to them as they consider what works best for them during their vacation. Taxis are especially popular among those who don't feel comfortable driving in a foreign country, and the addition of a taxi that specializes in sightseeing means it is an affordable option as well.
In Port of Spain, taxis are easy to come by, especially in the busy tourist spots, but taxi stands exist throughout town for those times when you just don't see one on the street. You'll recognize them by the letter “H” in the license plate.
In addition to standard taxis, there is also a service in Port of Spain called a Maxi Taxi. These are actually 12 to 24 person mini buses that offer something akin to sightseeing tours around the island. You can tell where the Maxi is going by looking at the colored band along the side of the vehicle. For example, those with Red Bands travel east from Port of Spain to Sangre Grande and costs between TT3 and TT10 per person.

The cabs here are unmetered, and rates are not set by the government. Instead, each individual company determines what they charge, so be sure to discuss the cost with your driver upon entering the vehicle. You'll also want to be aware that some drivers charge for use of the trunk, and while a tip is never expected, it is an extra expense you should work into your budget to show your driver your appreciation for their time. About 15 percent of the total bill is the norm here.
