The main beach of the Calibishie area, Calibishie Beach is lined with villas, shops, and people ready to relax. All this creates a fun mix of the more tourist oriented beaches of the south, and the calm quiet beaches of the north; a great beach on its own and an even better compromise.
From Picard Beach Cottages, go eight miles (13 kilometers) to the east-northeast to locate this beach.
2 | Pointe Baptiste Cave
Situated within easy traveling range from Calibishie, this cave is located 0.4 miles (0.7 km) east-northeast of Calibishie Beach.
3 | Black Sands Beach
It is not hard to see how Black Sands Beach got its name. Come take a look at one of the most famous beaches on the island.
Pointe Baptiste Cave is located a few hundred yards (a few hundred meters) to the north-northwest of this beach.
4 | White Sands Beach
Located off the property of Pointe Baptiste, White Sands beach is one of the lighter colored beaches on Dominica. While it might not compete with the white shores of the Bahamas or other Caribbean islands, White Sands Beach is definitely a Caribbean beach fit for those looking for paradise.
Situated within easy traveling range from Calibishie, this beach is a quarter mile (a half kilometer) from Black Sands Beach.
5 | Hodges Bay Beach
A dark, natural beach surrounded by some of the best beaches on Dominica, it is understandable that Hodge's Bay Beach is one of the less popular. However, this makes Hodge's Bay Beach a quiet beach much less crowded than its neighbors.
If you are coming from White Sands Beach, go a half mile (less than a kilometer) southeast to reach this beach.

The capes around this beach feature amazing sightseeing and bird watching. They are the main attractions of the area.
Guests will be able to find this beach 7.7 miles (12.4 km) from Picard Beach Cottages.
1 | Purple Beach
On the north end of Prince Rupert Bay, just south of Cabrits National Park, Purple Beach is in a region well known for it's excellent diving and snorkeling. This beach is a popular weekend spot.
Found within traveling distance from Portsmouth, this beach is located two miles (three and a half kilometers) to the north of Picard Beach Cottages.
1 | Cabrits National Park
This nature preserve is a mixture of forest and swampland that today is the location of choice for both tourists and migratory birds. In addition, the site is also home to a large fort built by the British in the latter part of the eighteenth century that included around 50 different building.
From Picard Beach Cottages, go two and a half miles (four kilometers) north-northwest to reach this nature sanctuary/wildlife reserve.
2 | Fort Shirley
Built in the 1700's, this fort once stood guard for all of Dominica. Today it is part of the Cabrits National Park, and offers tourist a unique window into the history of the Caribbean's colonial past.
Head a few hundred yards (a quarter kilometer) from Cabrits Historical and Marine Park to find this historical site, which is located within driving range of Portsmouth.
3 | Fort Shirley Welcome Center and Museum
At the Fort Shirley Welcome Center is a small museum that is open to the public. The museum showcases both the natural and historic importance of the grounds, discussing plants that reside along the trails, and some of the area's military history.

1 | L'Anse Tortue
L'Anse Tortue is one of Dominica's softest sand beaches. Swimming can be rough, but you can enjoy laying a towel right on the soft sand to sunbathe, or take a barefoot stroll.
Travelers will be able to find this beach 9.2 miles (14.9 km) to the east of Picard Beach Cottages.
2 | L'Anse Noire
The views are incredible but the water is rough on L'Anse Noire Beach. There are adventurous people who snorkel and dive here, but be sure you're experienced if you're going to try it.
This beach is within easy traveling range of Calibishie, 0.4 miles (0.6 km) east of L'Anse Tortue.
3 | Woodford Hill Bay
This beach boasts clear, warm waters and some good snorkeling spots. It's also safe to swim in and in possession of some of the island's softest sand.
L'Anse Noire is located a quarter mile (a half kilometer) west of this beach.
1 | Waitukubuli Trail: Borne to Penville
Interested guests will be able to find this hiking trail approximately three miles (approximately four and a half kilometers) northeast of Picard Beach Cottages.
2 | Indigo Art Gallery
A display of work created by Marie Frederick can be seen at Indigo, which is located right next to the cottage where she feels inspired to create her work. Although she was born in Normandy and studied art throughout Europe and in North Africa, she has managed to capture something about the nature of the island in her paintings that even locals have been captivated by.
This art gallery is within walking distance from Waitukubuli Trail: Borne to Penville, and is on the premises of Indigo Tree Cottage.

Adjacent to Ross University Medical School, Picard beach is just a little strip of shoreline south of Portsmouth where visitors or students take a quick dip.

On the edge of Prince Rupert Bay as you approach Portsmouth from the south is Dominica's Secret Beach. The ocean is clear and warm, with great spots for snorkeling and diving nearby.

Right off a major highway but still secluded by a wall of trees, Batalie Beach is a great compromise of isolation and convenience.
