Purple Beach

On the north end of Prince Rupert Bay, just south of Cabrits National Park, Purple Beach is in a region well known for it's excellent diving and snorkeling. This beach is a popular weekend spot.

Located on the island of Dominica, You might want to drop by whether or not you are staying in the vicinity. Vacationers who want a somewhat serene and secluded beach, that's also not too far from the town's amenities may really like the middle ground found at Purple Beach. It's not the type of beach that gets packed every day, but it's not quiet or boring either.

How to Access The Beach
This beach is just north of Portsmouth off of West Coast Road. It's easy to find and does not require four wheel drive for access.

Amenities and Ambiance

Purple Beach's aquamarine waters are protected by a beautiful coral reef structure. This beach has soft gray sand and is shaded by sea almond trees.

The concession stand on-site could come in handy, even if you plan to have lunch elsewhere. On some days, it may be possible to get lunch from one of the mobile vendors who typically operate along this coastline.

Unfortunately, you won't find any public restrooms along this coastline, so those of you traveling with small children may want to consider another spot.

Be mindful that the area surrounding Purple Beach is an urban area, so make sure to get a spot!

What's Nearby


This spot is on Dominica's North West coast. It is close to Fort Shirley, which is within a distance that tourists could probably walk or take a cab to, and it is one of a few attractions close-by.

If you're interested in mixing a little culture with your trip to the beach, you should consider a trip to Fort Shirley Welcome Center and Museum, a lovely museum found three quarters of a mile to the west, giving beachgoers the chance to escape that hot midday sunshine.
