On the north end of Prince Rupert Bay, just south of Cabrits National Park, Purple Beach is in a region well known for it's excellent diving and snorkeling. This beach is a popular weekend spot.
Situated on the island of Dominica, You might think about stopping by regardless of whether you are staying in the immediate vicinity. Those of you who might prefer a beach that's a little less crowded, but still fun and active, may really like the middle ground found at Purple Beach. It's slightly off the beaten path, but it's not quiet or boring either.
This beach is just north of Portsmouth off of West Coast Road. It's easy to find and does not require four wheel drive for access.
Purple Beach's aquamarine waters are protected by a beautiful coral reef structure. This beach has soft gray sand and is shaded by sea almond trees.
The snack bar here is the ultimate convenience if you need a cold drink, or something to hold you over until dinner. Sometimes, visitors will be able to get lunch from one of the mobile vendors who typically set up at this spot.
Unfortunately, restrooms will not be available here, so those of you traveling with small children may want to consider another spot.
Remember to take into account that Purple Beach is in an area which is a popular spot, so plan accordingly.
This beach is positioned on the North West coast of Dominica; it will be near other attractions like Fort Shirley, which is three quarters of a mile away.
If you're interested in combining some cultural exploration with your trip to the beach, you should plan a trip to Fort Shirley Welcome Center and Museum, a lovely museum found fairly close-by, and might make a nice break from the midday sun.

The nearby town of Portsmouth is not lacking in exploration opportunities, yet also not overflowing with buildings.
Whether or not you encounter a lot of other visitors will depend on if you visit during a popular season, which is often indicated by how busy the hotels are. The area does not have very many large hotels, but you may encounter visitors from smaller accommodations in the area.

One of the best ways to round off a laid-back trek to the beach is to dine at an area restaurant, where you can sample regional favorites, within just a few miles of this shoreline. One of the nearest restaurants is Purple Turtle Beach Club. This restaurant has both Caribbean and International cuisines.

Vacationers who are looking for the ideal beach will have plenty of other choices on Dominica besides Purple Beach.

Of course, Dominica has hundreds of natural wonders to discover, but a trip to Purple Beach could end up a family favorite.
