Snorkeling Around Providenciales

Snorkeling is popular throughout the Caribbean, but some destinations have quite a few limitations that prevent visitors from snorkeling just the way they want to.  On Providenciales, tourists will find that not only are the conditions favorable year round, and they sights to be seen are truly stunning, but also that snorkeling is great both from the beaches and at offshore locales.

The beaches of Providenciales are great for snorkeling because of the warm waters, calm surf, and clear visibility. Every beach has a little something for snorkelers, whether it be the rays hiding in the sand, or a school of brightly colored fish swimming about a patch of sea grass.  Of course, some spots are better than others and you'll likely be most impressed by the beaches of the north coast where you can typically access some amount of coral reef by swimming out from the shore just a short distance.  The Bight Reef Snorkeling (also known as the Coral Gardens) and Smith's Reef Snorkeling are particularly notable for this possibility.

Of course, to round out your snorkeling experience, you will want to make sure you head out to deeper waters to experience the sea life at these spots.  In addition to the populated islands of Turks and Caicos, there are many more that remain uninhabited and it is these spots that often offer the most pristine waters and thus mesmerizing snorkeling opportunities. You'll be able to access them a number of ways, including sailing to these spots, signing up for a snorkeling specific island tour, or heading out  with a group of divers and snorkel instead of scuba dive.

Snorkeling Sites

If you'd like to see what's down below you might want to check out Long Point. Offering what most consider to be the best snorkeling off Provo. For starters, it is calm enough for beginners, but the sites are so interesting that experienced snorkelers will enjoy themselves as well. This snorkeling site is found within the central part of Providenciales.

Grace Bay Beach is another option. At what is known as one of the best beaches in the world, this coral reef is just feet from the sand and always teeming with curious fish and the occasional sea turtle.

A third place to consider is Northwest Point National Park. Located within a marine park, this protected area offers healthy and amazing snorkeling opportunities. Do be aware, however, that conditions can be rough at times, so only strong swimmers should attempt this site. The rocky coast and several small coves of shallow water offer the best snorkeling.

A fourth location where you can go snorkeling is The Bight Beach. Provo's favorite sport for snorkeling, this reef can become quite busy during days when the conditions are good. This clearly marked reef starts right off the beach in shallow waters, and is home to many fish who are so used to people that they swim up with no fear. If you're interested, this site is located in the central part of Providenciales.

Davy Bight Beach is a fifth location to consider. This site is great for snorkelers who want to see more than brightly colored fish. Here, you'll also encounter turtles, lobsters, and sharks gliding around the elkhorn coral and oddly shaped sponges.
