Natural Attractions in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is typified by the mangrove swamps which divide the town into different sections.  Residents see these swamps as part of every day life, but to tourists they are a great way to experience local flora and fauna.  A stroll along the shore is another great way to spend some time outdoors, but for more extensive eco-tourism options, you may consider a few day trips while making this town your quiet home base. 

Nature Preserves and Hiking

Do you hope to spend more of your vacation time seeing the local flaura and fauna? You might be pleased to know the area has a popular nature preserve nearby.

Punta Nizuc National Park is a great nature preserve located 14.1 mi. North-Northeast of central Puerto Morelos. This who take the plunge at Punta Nizuc will be treated to a submerged wonderland of statues, corals, colorful algae, and hundreds of different kinds of wildlife, from tropical fish and starfish, to dolphins and sea-turtles. This well known and well traveled spot has stayed popular for a reason, and those diving here will easily see why.

Caves

Even though most visitors come for the beautiful water and coastline, those aren't the only way to enjoy the area's natural wonders. The one example is Chac Tun Cave Tour/ Paintball City. It is located 19.1 mi. South West of central Puerto Morelos.

Parks and Botanical Gardens

Selvatica

Guests can also spend some time in a couple of parks, or a botanical garden in and around Puerto Morelos.

If you'd like to see some beautiful tropical vegetation, you might want to visit Yax-Che Jardin Botanico, which is found within the heart of Puerto Morelos. The botanical garden offers a walk down a path that features many native species of trees and plants.

Another attraction in this category is Selvatica. You can get to Selvatica from Cancun by taking the highway towards Playa del Carmen. Once in Puerto Morelow, stay in the right lane and avoid the bridge.

Zoos and Aquariums

Crococun Zoo

If the idea of spending part of a day surrounded by animals sounds like fun, you should visit Croco Cun Zoo. If you'd like the zoo to provide transportation for you, they suggest buying a ticket with this service included at least a day in advance.

Another similar attraction is Crococun Zoo. This attractions is located just under 20 miles away from Cancun in the Maya Riviera. Take the MYAB bus line from the Cancun or Playa del Carmen bus stations for a direct ride to the zoo.
