Puerto Plata Attractions

Centrally located and afford-ably priced, Puerto Playa is a hot destination for travelers who need little more than a luxury hotel and a beautiful beach to satisfy them on their getaway.  What many people fail to realize is that there is more to this area of the island than sun and sand.  Indeed, many mountains, museums, and monuments are easily explored from Puerto Plata, and there are a handful of casinos for a little gaming action as well. 


Dorada Beach

One beach that's good for snorkeling is Playa Costambar. Located within the city and off the main road, Playa Costambar is a bit more crowded than other beaches in the area. However, the ease of access and the many nearby amenities make it an option for most people in the area.

Another location for beach-goers to consider is Dorada Beach. This beach is located just east of Puerto Plata.

Cofresi Beach: Cofresi Beach is located about four mile west of the town center off Calle Principal.

Landmark Attractions

Fortaleza San Felipe

An interesting landmark worth visiting is Amber Museum. It is found within downtown Puerto Plata. Dominican Amber is said to be some of the clearest in the world, and visitors can see for themselves at the Amber Museum. With a wide collection of valuable local amber on display, this museum is one of the more unique offerings on the island.

Another interesting landmark worth visiting is Teleferico Mountain Top. It is located in Puerto Plata. You can only visit during the week from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Faro Puerto Plata: A recognized International Historic Site, the lighthouse was actually built in New York in 1879 and shipped the Dominican Republic. Today it is a popular place to take pictures and visit, though you will be unable to actually climb up the lighthouse.

Yasika Adventures

Yasika Adventures is one of the outdoor tourist attractions that's popular with visitors. One of the first zip-line adventures to open on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, Yasika Adventures is a great way to see the natural side of the country in an exhilarating and unique way.

Isabel de Torres National Park is another option you might enjoy. This popular attraction in Puerto Plata is normally just visited for the Cristo Redentor located at the top. However, the whole area surrounding the statue is a national park tasked with preserving the natural significance of the region.
