Centrally located and afford-ably priced, Puerto Playa is a hot destination for travelers who need little more than a luxury hotel and a beautiful beach to satisfy them on their getaway.  What many people fail to realize is that there is more to this area of the island than sun and sand.  Indeed, many mountains, museums, and monuments are easily explored from Puerto Plata, and there are a handful of casinos for a little gaming action as well.

Beaches

Dorada Beach

You'll discover a small variety of beaches to consider in the area. Click on each beach name for more detail concerning that beach.

A beach scene where you can go snorkeling is Playa Costambar. The beach is located right off a main road in town and has plenty of parking.

A second alternative that beach-goers can consider is Dorada Beach. Swaying palm trees line the golden shore of Dorada Beach, which features deep navy colored waters. It boasts Blue Flag Certification and has been ranked as one of the top beaches in the world by Fodors in 2014.

Cofresi Beach: Cofresi Beach is split into two sections, one half of which is public, and one private. Locals can often be found enjoying their weekends on the public side, which makes it a great spot if you want to do a little mingling.

Landmark Attractions

Fortaleza San Felipe

Many travelers choose to visit Amber Museum. It is located in downtown Puerto Plata. The amber on display at the Amber Museum is not the kind you will find in the jewelry store. Instead, you will find pieces with fossilized creatures inside, including lizards and bugs.

Another popular destination is Teleferico Mountain Top. It is found in Puerto Plata. After a 15 minute cable car ride up to the top of the mountain, guests encounter a stature of Christ the Redeemer, which stands with open arms. They also have access to beautiful botanical gardens and views of the ocean and the city.

Faro Puerto Plata: A recognized International Historic Site, the lighthouse was actually built in New York in 1879 and shipped the Dominican Republic. Today it is a popular place to take pictures and visit, though you will be unable to actually climb up the lighthouse.

These are just a few of your choices. For more in-depth coverage of other sites worth visiting this specific topic, go to this page about other sites worth seeing in Puerto Plata.

Natural Attractions

Yasika Adventures

One of the worthwhile natural attractions is Yasika Adventures. One of the first zip-line adventures to open on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, Yasika Adventures is a great way to see the natural side of the country in an exhilarating and unique way.

Isabel de Torres National Park is a second attraction you might want to consider. This popular attraction in Puerto Plata is normally just visited for the Cristo Redentor located at the top.
