Puerto Plata is the most popular tourist destination in the Dominican Republic.  But, why?  The beaches, of course.  There are at least half a dozen worth mentioning in this port town, and tourists generally spend their days split between their resort, the restaurants, and the beaches.

If you are looking for a place to snorkel, a place where that's an option is Playa Costambar. With calm water, clean sand, and a wall of trees separating the beach from the road, Playa Costambar creates an aurora of peace and tranquility despite the proximity to the city.

A second alternative to consider is Dorada Beach. This beach is located just east of Puerto Plata.
