Puerto Plata is the most popular tourist destination in the Dominican Republic. But, why? The beaches, of course. There are at least half a dozen worth mentioning in this port town, and tourists generally spend their days split between their resort, the restaurants, and the beaches.

If you are hoping to go snorkeling, a place with that option is Playa Costambar. With calm water, clean sand, and a wall of trees separating the beach from the road, Playa Costambar creates an aurora of peace and tranquility despite the proximity to the city.
A second place to consider is Dorada Beach. This beach is located just east of Puerto Plata.
