Meant to protect Puerto Plata from pirates, Fortaleza San Felipe was constructed in 1577 and has seen at least some battles in its life time, including when the United States defeated the French and Spanish in a small battle at the site.
The modern fort is known mainly as a museum, though visitors are still free to observe the fort from the outside at no cost. If you do enter the museum, you will be able to ask the staff any questions you have about the fort and its history.
Consider staying in Puerto Plata if you plan on visiting Fortaleza San Felipe, as travelers to this area of the Dominican Republic will be excited to have easy site access for the duration of their trip. There are a decent bunch of hotels in the community within range of Fortaleza San Felipe.
