Ballena Beach

Due to its representation of biodiversity, Ballena Beach is a designated UNESCO biosphere reserve. Instead of visiting this beach to swim and frolic in the sea, most vacationers head this way to view the beautiful isolated surroundings that is known for being prime nesting grounds for many species of bird, turtles, and toads.

Located on the southwestern edge of the island of Puerto Rico, You should consider dropping by regardless of whether you are staying in the vicinity. For a change from the usual crowded beach spots, you should consider visiting Ballena Beach.

Amenities and Ambiance

The Caribbean Sea laps ashore in a deep blue hue, touching upon the soft white sands. Throughout the protected beach area, visitors can view blue lagoons surrounded by cacti and coconut palms, mangrove forest, and perhaps even a manatee or two.

Please note that public restrooms are not available, which is something to consider if you're bringing the kids, or plan to spend all day outside. The water here is clear and good for snorkeling, so bring your gear if you're looking to see what goes on beneath the surface.

Ballena Beach brings visitors a quiet and tranquil haven, since the location that surrounds the beach is away from most urbanization.

What's Nearby


The beach is wonderful, but the surrounding area has a lot to offer, too. Look for it on the South West coast of Puerto Rico. It is near Cana Gorda State Park, which is seen a mile and a half away, and it is one of a few attractions in the region.

Museums and beaches may seem an odd combination to some, but many travelers find that museums like Museo Historico de Las Piedras (situated a relatively quick cab ride away) offer an entertaining diversion and a new way to experience Puerto Rico's culture.

Ballena Beach is very close to Guánica, so a trip into the city is a definite option. Ballena Beach tourists looking for some additional excitement will want to think about going to Guánica, since it's nearby and is a particularly busy area of Puerto Rico. From the beach, Guánica is not far away, roughly three and a half miles (five and a half kilometers).


The mood here——social and lively, or virtually empty—— will depend on many factors, including the capacity of nearby hotels. The beach is not located close to many large hotels, but it can attract visitors staying at some of the area's smaller options.

Vacationers searching for the perfect beach will have lots of choices besides Ballena Beach.

You might also enjoy Manglillos Beach, found only a taxi trip away from the shore. However, if that's not exactly what you're looking for, Tamarindo Beach could provide a little more opportunity for excitement, and isn't far from nearby attractions. It's found a half mile to the east-southeast.
