Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge

An official national wildlife refuge of the United States, Cabo Rojo was established in 1974 as refuge for migratory birds and several tropical bird species that call the area home year-round.

During the winter months, visitors will be given a prime opportunity to spot the endangered yellow-shouldered blackbirds, the primary residence of the wildlife refuge. The site has stations built up specifically to offer good views of the animals, so you should catch a glimpse of something, even in the summer months. Additionally, be sure to stop by the visitor's center where you can get more in-depth information on events and information.

Drive south on Route 2, which is the main highway, away from Mayaguez. Exit onto Route 100 towards Cabo Rojo, and take a left onto Route 101. After 0.8 miles, turn right onto Route 310. After three miles the refuge will appear on the left.

Positioned on the island of Puerto Rico, 4.0 miles south-southwest of Betances, Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge welcomes guests rooming on this part of the island. However, even if you aren't staying in this location, you should think about stopping by to check out the sights. It's 7.9 miles west of La Parguera.

Guests visiting this wildlife reserve will have no problem finding a meal, since you'll find a plentiful supply of lunch and dinner options in this area.
