An official national wildlife refuge of the United States, Cabo Rojo was established in 1974 as refuge for migratory birds and several tropical bird species that call the area home year-round.

During the winter months, visitors will be given a prime opportunity to spot the endangered yellow-shouldered blackbirds, the primary residence of the wildlife refuge. The site has stations built up specifically to offer good views of the animals, so you should catch a glimpse of something, even in the summer months. Additionally, be sure to stop by the visitor's center where you can get more in-depth information on events and information.

Location

Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge is located on the western part of the island of Puerto Rico, 4.0 miles south-southwest of Betances; it's 7.9 miles to the west of La Parguera.

Drive south on Route 2, which is the main highway, away from Mayaguez. Exit onto Route 100 towards Cabo Rojo, and take a left onto Route 101. After 0.8 miles, turn right onto Route 310. After three miles the refuge will appear on the left.
