An official national wildlife refuge of the United States, Cabo Rojo was established in 1974 as refuge for migratory birds and several tropical bird species that call the area home year-round.

During the winter months, visitors will be given a prime opportunity to spot the endangered yellow-shouldered blackbirds, the primary residence of the wildlife refuge. The site has stations built up specifically to offer good views of the animals, so you should catch a glimpse of something, even in the summer months. Additionally, be sure to stop by the visitor's center where you can get more in-depth information on events and information.
