Cerro Gordo Beach is a government run beach in Vega Alta, approximately 45 minutes from San Juan. This beach is a favorite amongst locals, yet remains much quieter than the beaches in resort laden areas of Puerto Rico. Because the beach is government run, lifeguards are on duty, and there are operational facilities. Camping is permitted here, allowing your day at the beach to extend into the night.

Visitors will find this beach on the North East coast of Puerto Rico. Pineapple Course at Dorado Beach is found two miles away, and it is one of the attractions in the region.
If you want to mix a cultural experience with your visit to the beach, you may want to consider visiting Science Park. This museum is located within driving distance, and might make a nice break from the midday sun.

Dorado is nearby and is in an area with interesting things to do and see, but isn't as sprawling and crowded as some other areas. From Cerro Gordo Beach, Dorado is a quick trip away, about four and a half miles (seven kilometers).

One of the best ways to round off a laid-back trek to the beach is to walk to an area restaurant, where you can get a taste of the local fare, within just a few miles of this shoreline. One of the closest restaurants is Mi Casa by Jose Andres. The restaurant serves contemporary food. Many guests rave about their seafood and tapas. You'll have the option of walking or taking a cab since it's not far off the beach at all.
